Acupressure in childbirth

Acupressure Lesson for Natural Pain Relief in Labour

The following information on Acupressure for Childbirth is from Debra Betts, author of

Acupuncture for Pregnancy & Childbirth

Acupressure is used to assist pregnant women to have a more pleasant birth experience.  Unlike acupuncture where needles are used, acupressure applies firm physical pressure to specific acupressure points using the thumbs, fingers, hands, elbows, or with various other devices on the surface of the body.

When helped by womens support people & health professionals, acupressure can:

  • Reduction in pain during contractions, labour & child birth
  • Support your body as it proceeds towards labour by ripening the cervix & preparing the uterus
  • Encourage the baby into the most optimal position for birth.
  • Induce an overall sense of calmness and a high level of satisfaction with the birth experience.
  • Be used at home, in hospitals or in birthing pool.
